Although
this frame was originally built in 1948, at some point, probably during
the 1970's, it had been modified to accommodate slightly more modern
equipment. Three cable guides had been fitted to the top tube for the
rear brake and a right hand gear lever boss had been brazed on. Removal
of the old paint also revealed that the original cable clips, fitted
to the underside of the top tube had been removed - these had been the
flat spring steel clip type. In addition a fairly deep dent at the rear
of the top tube and a few other small dents on the frame, had been filled
with soft solder, the front fork blades had one damaged dropout and
the rear triangle had been spread to accommodate 120 mm spacing, putting
a gentle curve in the stays from each of the two bridges.
Rather
than restore this machine to "period", and in keeping with the Flying
Scot owners tradition of updating and adapting to take the latest gear
I decided to convert it to take modern equipment, and for use during
the winter. The conversion consisted of removing the 70's additions
and replacement with braze-on's more suited to modern "gear" This included
twin downtube gear bosses, cable stops for the rear derailleur and underneath
the top tube for the rear brake cable, a set of down tube & seat
tube bottle bosses and a braze-on front derailleur bracket. At the same
time as the rear triangle was respaced to 130 mm, both the brake and
chainstay bridges were replaced, the brake bridge in particular was
lowered and change to take shallow drop callipers and to suit an Allen
key fitting. As the front forks were slightly damaged, these were replaced
with a set of Reynolds bladed forks by Dave Lloyd. In keeping with the
original forks, the mudguard and lamp brackets were transferred to the
new forks.
To
use modern quick release wheels the original thin plate frame ends (dropouts)
required thickening up using steel strips brazed to the inside of the
dropout, and at the same time, a gear hanger was brazed below the right-hand
frame end.
