JACKIE BONE

Riding for Glasgow United C.C. J.G. Bone became the first man in Great Britain to average more than 20 mph on a '12', covering 244.375 miles. A very successful Scottish club rider, in 1935 Jackie was also the Scottish Best All-rounder champion, with an average speed of 21.561 mph over the required 50 mile, 100 mile, and 12 hour events.

The above picture shows Jackie Bone in 1935 riding a '12' on a single speed fixed. The "helper" handing up a drink to him, is Jack Smith of Rattray's.

In 1936 he was selected as part of British Team at that years Olympic Games in Berlin, becoming the first Scot to be selected since 1912, and at his home town of Milngavie the local dignitaries held a dinner in his honour !

It's interesting to note in the above photograph, that he's using a typical 1930's machine with a short seat tube, long top tube and fairly relaxed angles. The amount of seatpost out of the tube is more reminiscent of so-called "modern" compact frames.....!
