FRAME & FORK ENDS (DROPOUTS) DETAIL
These
are typical of the type of dropouts fitted to most Scot's during
the late 1940's and early 50's. Ideal in some respects in that
the rear could be used for single speed (fixed or free), multiple
geared "derailleurs" (at least up to 4-speed) with a bracket fitting
or separate hanger, and also for hub geared machines. This type
of dropout was often referred to in the trade catalogues as a
"Stallard" type end.
|
Another variant
of the original cyclo dropout, was this type with an integral
hanger. Unfortunately many machines that had this dropout fitted
are found with the hanger cut off. The position of the hanger
making it only suitable for specific types of gear.

Cyclo Front
& Rear with integral Hanger
(1951) |
As
with the first Cyclo dropout, Simplex produced a version without
an integral hanger, as seen here.
|
The addition
to, or modification of the dropout by brazing a suitable hanger
to the underside was one solution as shown on this later version. |

Note ; At various times, manufacturers
in the UK and abroad often referred to these as front or rear ends,
fork ends, with gear brackets or without, forward facing ends etc.etc.
There seems to have been no common standard or correct or unified term
for these parts of the frame and fork. To keep it simple, the notes
on this page will refer to them as they are generically known by these
days, as dropouts (with or without a gear hanger) and for the rearward
facing ones "Track Ends"
The year shown below each image, relates to the year of build of the
frame that they were seen on.
