FRAME DETAILS

Feel free to look around the pages however please note these are incomplete as they are work-in-progress!

Unlike the more "fancy" marques - Hetchins, Bates etc. that relied on their fancy lugwork or in some cases obscure frame designs to make them questionably 'different' from the rest, David Rattray & Co. Ltd. produced down to earth handbuilt machines. Generally based on solid cycle engineering principles and sound construction, the company management certainly knew what worked and also what would sell.

Not that Flying Scot's were all the same or boring. Far from it, as pre & post World War II component development and the frame & fittings options available to the customer were legendary, creating the situation where almost no two machines are exactly alike.

The Following Sections detail and explain some of the many variations in frame detail that exist.

IMPORTANT This is only a guide, produced by comparing all of the machines I've seen or examined and from other available information. Rattray's was a true custom builder for their own sales as retailer and wholesaler. The length of time that the company existed, the number of frames they produced and variations, means that it is unlikely to ever be definitive.
